Taking care of your water heater will keep your home running smoothly. When you add insulation you can save on water heating costs by at least 9 percent. The anode rod is the most important factor in the tank running well. In fact, some tanks can have more than one. Newer technologies can be used in the form of powered anodes that will take care of odors from bacteria. If the tank is full the electrolytic process starts and the anodes are destroyed to protect the naked steel. Powered anodes are electric and cannot be destroyed.

Cleaning your water heater is hard work and once you put cleaner in it has to be flushed out. A good CLR cleaner is best because it can clean the calcium, lime and rust. The electric heaters contain mineral deposits on the heating elements and then they fall to the bottom. Most will flush but some are too big to get through the drain valve.

Here are some prerequisites to remember:

Disconnect-turn off the electric power from the breaker box and mask the switch. Then disconnect the water inlet pipe.

Drain Some Water- Use a water hose and put it on the drain valve. Run it to a sink where the hot water can sit. Open the drain valve after you unscrew the water supply line. Let the all the water drain and then close the valve.

Put in the cleaner and check it by putting a plastic bag over the inlet pipe and watch if it inflates. When it does inflate the CLR cleaner is neutralized.

Overall Operation


As we mentioned above, a boiler contains water which is used to heat the home. the fuel source of the unit will help create the heat by turning the water to steam and the piping the steam through the home. This type of system will eventually turn the steam back to water and then start the process once again. The steam will return and then start the process over and this is called a closed system. If a unit does not return the condensation then it is called an open system


Firetube Boiler


One type of boiler is a firetube system. This system will have fire or a hot gas in the inside of the tubes of the boiler shell. These tubes are surrounded by water and the tubes will be arranged so that the gases inside can pass through as many as four times before they pass out of the stack. The system will expose the heat transfer surface at the water and this type of boiler is found in 80% of boilers that are in use today.


Packaged Boiler


A packaged boiler is a subtype of a Firetube boiler. This type of unit contains the fuel burning equipment as well as mechanical draft, automatic controls and accessories. The unit will work automatically and needs very little care.


Watertube


A watertube system is another type of boiler unit. This unit has fire or hot gas as well but these items are directed to and around the outside of the tubes instead of the inside. A watertube boiler has at least two drums and is shaped like a rectangle. This unit will separate the steam and water in the top of the drum and the bottom will collect sludge from the unit.

Energy Star is not a brand name for air conditioners. It is a program that has been developed by the U.S. Department of Energy, and designed to promote the idea of selling and buying products that are energy-efficient. Ideally, when the consumer sees the Energy Star label on a product, it is a signal that you can expect to be able to save energy with the product, and of course, that is going to translate to greater savings in your budget.

 

And make no mistake about it - the government unquestionably wants you to see the Energy Star designation, because increased sales for those products is going to mean a lot of energy savings in the long run. This program has indeed been in place for 20 years, and that is a testament to the effectiveness of the message. Let's face it - the smart people are always looking for some kind of an edge that can help them in their quest to spend less money.

 

What does a product have to do to qualify for Energy Star?

 

Well, let's talk about air conditioners for purposes of this discussion. There is a qualification process, and there are minimum efficiency figures that have to be met. Air conditioners have to have a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of 14.5 or above, an EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) of at least 12, and 8.2 or greater in the HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). All of these measurements are emblematic of energy efficiency. These high efficiency levels certainly contribute to lowering your bill, as does the construction of the home. Of course, the best way to conserve energy may be to plan using less of it.

This would seem to be a reasonable thing. Through the Energy Star program, the government wants consumers to be educated about comparative products. Here are some tips for effective air conditioning maintenance.

1) Proper Servicing

Have your air conditioner serviced by a professional ( like ourselves ) at-least once every six months. A professional can check the direction of air flow, inspect the coils and assess its efficiency.

2) Make sure the air conditioner unit's registers are not covered

This includes window curtains and hanging plants too. Ideally, the curtains should be held about 25cms above your unit, in case of a window type air conditioner.

3) Curtains and Drapes

Use curtains to block the heat and sunlight into the room during the hottest part of the day. This not only prevents unnecessary heat accumulation in your room, but also keeps your cooling appliances clean.

4) Maintenance

Maintenance is one of the most important, and equally overlooked aspects of maintaining your air conditioner. Keep the appliance and the surroundings clean, vacuum the house regularly, and make sure wall sprays and other sticky items are kept away from the unit. Also, all kinds of indoor plants and creepers should be kept well away from the air conditioning unit. This is because these plants usually attract various small insects that might seek refuge inside your unit.

5) Chemical Cleaning

Vacuuming of the coils causes one of the most dangerous forms of air pathogens available. The growth on the coils of the air conditioners is set loose by vacuuming, which is then present in the free air that we breathe, getting lodged in our lungs and producing infections and diseases. Chemical cleaning is required for proper cleansing of the coils. Make sure the servicemen use good quality chemicals, that have been attested by recognized national laboratories before giving them the green signal. Also make sure the chemicals are properly removed from the surface of the coils once the cleaning is done, so as to prevent their mixing with the air we breathe. Proper professionals will be able to remove the lodged particles smoothly so as to allow proper flow of air and enable proper cooling.
